  1. Hopefully Amazon will get their act together in time for me to read it on my after lunch walk.

    • What is the advantage in waiting for Amazon to have it available? I know most people don’t have the objections I have to Amazon but I’d think when Amazon screws up like this you’d simply get it from someone who didn’t screw up.

      • Yeah, I’ve been buying from Smashwords all along, and I’m happy to keep doing so. Amazon’s version is locked into Kindle readers, and usually late as well.

      • If you have a Kindle, Amazon is very convenient. It’s basically one click and it’s ready to read without having to copy files around and such. Also, for good or bad, Amazon is the main market for ebooks.

If you don’t want to wait, however, I get a bigger percentage of the price from Smashwords, so I’m generally happy to have people buy from there.

      • You can get the same ‘one click and it’s ready to read’ with most e-book programs – just need to set the default for ebook files to be opened by your ebook program automatically. I personally use Calibre but it will work with most programs around.

I suppose this is more proof that the predictions about how people would become more computer literate were proven false – most people barely know how to turn on a computer, much less anything “advanced” like changing settings on the browser.

  2. Should be fully available on Amazon now.

    Cannot wait to get it.

  4. Do you plan to do an art dump for this one?

  5. Finished the book, great reading as usual, although having just recently reread the series I’ll note the number of “secret new spell it’s better no one knows about that are developed by some isolated genius and die with them ” in the series is getting annoying.

Buy this book. You don’t want to get Nava angry.

  7. I appreciate Cari getting a moment to shine. And the look of shock on her classmates’ faces. Thank you once more for a fine read… even if I did stay up late to finish.

  8. I loved the nod to the Aneka Jansen series with the “you can call me Speaker” comment because the names are too hard to pronounce.. Aneka Jansen and The Death’s Handmaiden are my two favorites series from you.

Sometimes I think authors make up these the tongue tying names to see if they can make reader’s head explode. Some of them act as speed bumps bringing my smooth reading to a violent halt.

    • Not sure which one you mean, but all the names I use in these books are real names. Of course, some real names are tough to pronounce…

Honestly, I know what you mean. I get the same thing when I come across a name I can’t easily pronounce.

It’s not your books. I have some other I read that throw out the alphabet soup. I wish they would put a pronunciation guide in the back.

Heck the city I was born in is Albany NY. We said ALL-Bany. I understand it is AL-bany in the UK and Australia. Personally I love Glyn Stewart doing literal translations of alien names that would sound like a garbage disposal with a spoon in it.

The very formal names in DH do nicely reflect, the culture and status of the person.

  11. I have enjoyed all your books but almost four weeks after finishing The Business of War, I am still unhappy with it. I like books that have two things: 1, a strong heroine who beats the crap out of the bad guys; and 2, the heroine gets the girl. I liked your books because they delivered action, and love and romance. The action is still there but, as Captain Jack might say, where’s the love gone? In this book, Nava and Suki barely interact. There is no emotional connection between them. The latest Tatsu Yamada is similarly lacking any evidence of love between Tatsu and Sachiko.

I would quite like Suki to get her wish and marry Nava. I know Nava would say it’s impossible, due to the DNA test. But if Nava is claiming the Greylings couldn’t fake her DNA test then all I can say is, “I don’t believe it”. At which point I would have to hide from Nava.

Please bring back the love and romance.

    • I’ll have to see what I can do. I think the next one should have adequate expression of love, given what I’ve got planned.
As for the marriage thing… Have to wait and see.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

  12. I love the DH series, and Nava is one of my favorite characters (bold, dry humor, and kicks ass), however, I’m just waiting for the Key of Darkness to be “real”.

Also I would love a return of both Misfits and Guardians. Ohh, and maybe a Fox Hunt Prequel?!? That would be awesome!

Anyway I enjoy most all of your stories, keep up the amazing work. Thanks.
