Who noticed the ‘Aliens’ easter egg?

Just wondering how many people noticed the Aliens reference in Disruptive Elements? Pure curiosity.

Still working on the next Death’s Handmaiden book. I think it’s looking good, even if I’m wobbling over precisely how it’s going to end.

  1. I did. But only from context, not because I actually know the line.

  2. I noticed it. Nice. Also, just reread the DH series again – can’t wait for a new book.

  3. Funnily enough, I always remember that line. Then again, I did go and see the movie in a theatre. Actually, I went to see it in two theatres. Three times over two cinemas in about a week. I was a bit obsessed with ‘Aliens.’

  4. Funny you should ask. I was like “what Aliens reference” then a moment later “oh that Aliens reference”.

Will there be a betting pool on who the mole is? I had my initial suspicions but changed my mind after Wolfe found out who it is.

  5. 🙂

Aliens was such a quotable film.

  6. Not I. Weirdly, I’ve never seen the movie. The only Aliens quote I know is “take off and nuke it from orbit.”

    • “I say we take off and nuke it from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.”

Might be ‘dust off,’ it’s been a while. I think I’ve used something like that in a book. The other famous one is “Get away from her you bitch!” Oh, and maybe “You don’t see them fucking each other over for a percentage.” That might be a bit niche. TBH, the one I used in this book was a bit niche too. I wasn’t expecting everyone to get it.

      • Pretty sure it’s take off. Also “Game over man. Game over!”

      • Yeah, internet says ‘take off,’ and the internet is never wrong…

I used to have a badge which read “Nuke ’em ’til they glow, then shoot ’em in the dark.”

        Just, FYI.

A good friend of mine was an artilleryman in the army and would always say “There’s no such thing as overkill, only reload and fire for effect.”

      • IIRC “prep for dust off” is earlier in the film.

  7. Haha, hard to miss when you explicitly mention it as an Aliens reference 😂 I’ll admit to noticing it before I read the mention. The “and now you’ve lost communications with them” was a good continuation of the whole Aliens scene.

    Nicely done!

Aliens egg. That would make for a very entertaining Easter egg hunt. Parts of the book gave me flashbacks to some of Larry Niven’s best. Is there such a thing as “hard fantasy”?

    • Larry Niven, huh? Wow.

Pretty sure “hard fantasy” isn’t a thing. Though, I suppose it would probably be non-historical fiction without the magic. You could argue that Crichton’s book ‘Eaters of the Dead’ might count (filmed as ‘The 13th Warrior.’

  9. You really need to update your Author’s Bio. You’ve been saying that you “recently took the big step of quitting your day job” for years now.
