Fire and Sleep

Or sleep and fire. I’m not getting much of the former, so I’m watching some YouTube while I contemplate trying to get a bit more sleep. (Actually, I think it might be any sleep tonight. It’s been a bad one.)

Anyway, I’ve been watching the various news broadcasts about the fires in the US. I swear I watch more news from over the Pond than from here. I have no idea where most of you live, but hopefully it’s not too close to any of the bad areas. Practically, if you do, it’s likely you won’t read this until after it’s all over.

Whatever your situation, stay safe.

  1. Well, last week was a bit rough – temperatures in the upper 90’s (F)/30’s (C). My abode faces the sun in the afternoon so things were… crispy. I’d recommend, if you can, that you stay up later for your building to cool down a bit before attempting to sleep. As to the forest fires, not to worry! It’s not climate change or anything, it’s the forest service not raking the leaves! (/sarcasm). We do get fires in the Pacific Northwest, last year took out a fair chunk of the power grid in my area for several days in addition to the “normal” consequences of a wildfire.

Hopefully this week won’t be quite as bad and you’ll be able to catch up on your sleep deficit. I’m looking forward to the next title; I’ve already read Loyalty 7 or 8 times.

  2. Our problem isn’t fire. Proving that the supreme being has a wicked sense of humor he attempted to fill Lake Mead in one thunderstorm. Most of the ground is closer to concrete than dirt and we flood quickly. Lightning, thunder 60mph winds hit us. A couple of casino roofs leaked so bad the gamblers stopped playing. Usually these people would continue to gamble even as a nuke was set to explode in a few minutes.

As far as sleep goes, can’t help you there. I have a couple of hips with nerve damage so they make it difficult to fall and stay asleep. I don’t try to force sleep. You cannot. Being an ancient relic work is no longer a problem so I sleep weird hours.

    • Yeah, if there is a supreme being who created all, I’m convinced he’s a novelist. It would explain a lot.
I suppose I do kind of try to force sleep. I go to bed because I feel tired, but I’m fully aware that I’ll fail. If I could sleep standing up, maybe I could fool myself into thinking I wasn’t going to bed. I need to book some time on the ISS and see if that works.

  3. You could always come to New Zealand for your summer, it is a lovely 10C here now but was -4C this morning with a beautiful frost. Makes sleeping a lot easier

  4. So, who would you select to play Nava in the movie

    • Yikes! No idea. I always imagine it being made as an anime, probably because it was originally inspired by one. Plus, I have no idea who the current young actors are. being old is terrible.

  5. Any idea when the next DH book will be released?

    • Sorry, no. My guess would be first half of next year because I don’t seem to be able to put that universe away for long, but I don’t have a specific plan.
Honestly, I’m having trouble getting anything past about 20,000 words at the moment. When my head’s back in the right space, I’ll take another look at DH.

  6. I never ‘watch’ news but frequently read it, and then only non standard. I’ve found that publicly broadcast US news eg., ABC, NBC FOX, CNN, (and I’ve heard that the BBC and Canadian broadcasting are the same) are basically all propaganda and don’t cover anything but highly focused political garbage. I live in Florida so the weather has been hot and wet this year. So much change! Up until about 5 years ago you could expect a little bit of rain every day… We called it Florida liquid sunshine! Then that stopped and we ended up with torrential rain for a couple of weeks straight at the beginning of Summer with no rain at all for the rest of the summer. That went on for several years. This year we’ve had very few light showers… it’s been mostly very heavy rain and quite a bit of it, so climate change is certainly playing havoc with traditional weather patterns. I personally suspect less of that has to do with cow farts and a lot more of it has to do with changes in the global conveyor current, which is the ocean current affected by the Ring of Fire. If anyone’s paid attention there has been more volcanic activity in the last couple of decades than in the previous several hundred years, and that, including undersea volcanic activity can definitely cause changes in undersea currents which directly affect weather patterns. Anyway I hope that everyone survives all the heat and that we get some more cool air coming soon. At least we didn’t get the ice age that they were predicting 25 years ago!

    • Can’t speak for Canadian media. American media is highly polarised, though you may be able to find unbiased reporting somewhere. The BBC is so unbiased it goes out the other side. There have been a number of cases where the Beeb has been criticised for giving too much attention to total crackpots who disagree with general scientific consensus.
Oh gods! Was the ice age thing 25 years ago? Actually, I think that was further back. I remember seeing that on the BBC (like I said, so unbiased it’s the opposite) when I was in school, which would be more like 40 years ago. Climate change started being a thing about a decade later. I was in my first job after university and arguing against it because of a report I’d seen on the BBC (which was, of course, bollocks).
I shan’t comment on your theory. I don’t have evidence either way. But cows don’t fart, they burp. 🙂

  7. How can you tell if a cow has farted? They stink too much. My wife is an Ohio farm girl. She can attest that farms look bucolic but smell bubonic.
