The Empress’s Mage

The Empress’s Mage is now available. This is a fantasy about a girl’s rise from inquisitive child to a position of power as a magician. Art dump (probably) tomorrow.

  1. Now up on Amazon UK and purchased.

  2. Also on Amazon.de

  3. The most decent cover EVER. 🙂 I like it.

  4. Purchased from Amazon UK
Curiously, I found it via the ASIN, but not with a title search, nor on the Amazon Author’s page!

    • I don’t think the title search works until it’s ‘officially’ published (which means everywhere). That’s why I include the ASIN as soon as possible.
The author page is, I think keyed to me claiming the book as my own, which isn’t automatic. I need to wait for publishing to finish before I can do that.
Amazon does keep improving things, but it’s not all perfect. 🙂

  5. It should be available in all Amazon territories now.

  6. WhooW!!!

Just noticed the page-count. That’s +300 pages right there in on my ereader!
I’m so looking forward to reading this…. right after the three other books on my “Currently Reading” tab…. Damn it that’s going to take whay to long….. 😦

  7. You explain that a keray is “the width of the thumb of someone”, which is the original definition of the inch as well.

Later you said she was “standing at a hundred and seventy-six keray” which means that their thumbs are extremely slender or those people are about 3-4 meters tall…

    • It’s about a centimetre.
And I agree that I may have that a bit wrong, though my thumb is 2 cm across (having just measured it), so Scottish men apparently used to have very thick thumbs. (And the document that definition is given in may have been changed at some point.)
I fall back upon my go-to excuse: it’s a fantasy. Even if Jessalyn really looks like a human, she was created by a goddess (along with the rest of the world), so maybe they have very slender thumbs. 🙂
Or I’ll correct that at some point. 🙂 🙂

  8. Finished the book, and really enjoyed it.
It is a complete, stand-alone story, but do you have more stories set in this world lurking in our future?

    • Okay, so, what happened was that I decided that the ending it has was the best idea. But originally it had another part to it, making it even longer and leaving it kind of on a cliffhanger. It would still have been fairly standalone, but it would have been open.
Now, it’s more standalone, and I have another story to tell if people like it. So, yes, there’s another book in it.

      • “This is a stand alone story”, “but I have an idea.”
Sounds about right for an author 😀

      • True, but this is a bit more like a video game company providing content they cut from the original in a DLC. Except I’ll have to come up with some new content to add to the cut stuff before I can call it a book.
Still, if you can’t guess some of the extra content from the threads left hanging in this book, I’ll be suprised.

  9. Just finished and I really enjoyed it. Really. I know it was planned as a stand alone, but I would not complain a whit if you found inspiration to go back there. As always, thank you for gifting us with your words.

  10. I really hope this ends up being the first in a series.

  11. Great book, I really enjoyed it, and would love to read more of the setting, one nitpick – You seem to have used the annoying “medeival peasents never washed” which while never true historically, could certainly be possible in your story…except you also have the poor have more than a couple of changes of clothes, which doesn’t fit.

  12. Just downloaded it. Looking forward to a relaxing reading. I wish Amazon would give me notices when a book came out rather than two weeks down the line. I get notices about books I have read that Amazon pushes hard. You think they would be able to tell I already had it. Other books and authors recommended seem to be drawn from a lottery and not any algorithm.

Your books are always a relaxing and enjoyable read. Some other authors have a style that gives me flashbacks to Roman Catholic grade school complete with black clad, ruler armed nuns towering over me.

    • I don’t think I need that imagery. 🙂 Glad you like them.
The books (or anything else) that they push are paid for. I’ve never paid for advertising, so I believe that getting something from my in the recommendations is, in fact, a lottery. Anyway, if you don’t understand their algorithm, think about me when I get my own books recommended to me.

  13. Hummm. I don’t know. A spandex clad super hero nun who uses a pointer and ruler as a weapon. She can reduce hardened criminals to quivering wrecks with a scolding from her. Might make a good character for your super hero series.

  14. Just finished reading, and….. Well. I liked it a lot!

I really liked the slice-of-life feel to it and the fact there was no all-encompassing bad-guy types or greater evil to fight. Or in other words the Mundane life in a Fantastical World. People dealing with the ordinary stuff of trade, craft and living while dealing with magical creatures and gods that occasionally actually make their presence felt.

The only slight quibble I’d have is that I’d really liked to have seen/ heard of Jessalyn at some pont visiting her hometown again and know their reactions to the growth she’s had.

Ps. I added my preliminary review on goodreads

    • Jess returning to Greenwall (and related stuff) was ‘cut for length.’ Basically, there’s a story I thought would be better saved for a sequel, and that has her going home in it. I felt ending it where I did fitted better with the general theme of a rise from rags to riches.
So, at some point, you’ll get your wish.

      • Thought it might be something like that. Or the “Yes that did happen…. off-screen at some point” way sometimes employed. I’m glad we will be able to see more of this world. Even if it’ll take a long time I’m still looking forward to it.

        Gr Cloak

      • Off-screen that? No way! Stuff’s been happening in Greenwall while she’s been away.

      • Ohh! But now you have me intrigued!

  15. Me like!

    Me like a LOT.

If you want to return to this world in another story, I will buy it no matter how long you make it.

No spoilers here, but I loved the ending. Rags to riches can often make a great story and the way she finished this story was just so poetic it made me smile.

That is right, you silly fools. KEEP ON underestimating her. Please!

  16. I liked it the first time and re-reading the ending doesn’t change my mind. it needs a second book, BTW, thanks for avoiding the cliff hangar. That would have sucked,

More “Jessalyn ,” please. I just discovered your work, and I fell in love with Jessalyn sometime in the first chapter. I left a five star review on Amazon, then went looking for book two. Much to my disappointment, it doesn’t exist (yet, I hope).
    Thanks for the excellent read.
