Computers Suck

Okay, so, my main rendering machine, which was working fine yesterday, won’t start today. I was thinking I needed a new one, but this is not the way I was planning to go.

Hopefully, this won’t impact timescales for the next book because I’ll have fixed/replaced it by the time I need to make a new cover. I just hope I can recover the data because I know the last backup I have doesn’t include the latest character models. There’s a PC repair shop in the village I live in, so there’s a chance I can get this thing operational again. *sigh* I hate computers sometimes.

In other news, the isekai novel I’m writing is going to get a name change. Currently, I haven’t decided what it’s changing to, so it’ll remain as ‘Isekai’ until I do.

  1. They often do. Hopefully it’s not the hard drive that’s failed. Best of luck with it.

    • I have a strong feeling it’s the graphics card. Unfortunately, I don’t have a spare lying around that I can swap in to check. Well, don’t think I have. Maybe if I dig around… Sunday project, I think.

  2. Do what I did, unplug the hard drive from your old machine and plug it into your new one or turn it into an external drive. Sorted!

  3. Sorry to hear that, they do seem to go when you can least afford it. Is it getting through POST or just flat refusing to power up at all? The latter would suggest the PSU has gone which isn’t too expensive to fix.

    • It’s powering up, but then it goes nowhere aside from the graphics card doing some weird shit (technical term). Hence, I suspect the graphics card has semi-died. I’ve got a cheap replacement coming to test my hypothesis.
Thinking about it, I did have the thing rendering for 36 hours straight prior to this collapse. If it had died immediately after that, I’d be sure that was what killed the poor machine, but it croaked after booting up happily once more. A last hoorah, it seems.

  4. Well, it’s not just the graphics card. Looks like I’m buying a new PC.

  5. Any news on this (and on your next novel)?

  6. Hey Niall are you ok? You’ve been MIA for a while.

    • Hey. Yeah, I’m okay. I need to do some updates here.
I’ve been up to my nose in it for the last little while, but things are looking up again, so expect some more posts soon and a new book in a couple of weeks.
