I am reading through the book now and something I have noticed that you tend to do is to close chapters on sex jokes. I am not one of the prudes that would have a problem with that (I would really not be reading your book if that was the case), but it irked me a bit because it gives a lot of the female characters very similiar voices
I am done reading it now and first of I have to say that I always have a lbast reading your books and this one was no exception, but I have a couple of questions. Only problem is that the quesitons are pretty spoilery and I don’t know how to make spoilers on wordpress so that I don’t accidentally spoil the book for someone who comes here to see it is released
That’s how the calculations worked out. I model my characters using a game system, primarily to keep them consistent in what they can do. Using the ‘cosmic energy boost,’ Cygnus could lift around a million tons in that configuration. Practically, something like an aircraft carrier would be impossible because it’s not designed to be lifted on a point. It would likely buckle and fall apart. You’d need something designed to be hauled up that way.
I want to say that I was baffled by that number as well. Even if it’s correct in your system it sounds out of place at that point. And considering that even a 747 weighs less than four HUNDRED tons at take-off, Cygnus’s final action in the book seems a little unimpressive.
PS: The Nimitz class only weighs 100,000 tons, not a million.
Yeah, she can lift a huge amount, but she’s burning energy to do it the whole time. She’s not sagging at the end from the weight, she sagging from the effort of powering up her muscles for ten or fifteen minutes.
Keeping an aircraft in the air isn’t so much about strength as it is about balance and ensuring the aircraft stays in one piece.
Plus, Supergirl lifts a million tons of alien spacecraft at the end of season one. That’s from a standing start and into orbit.
True Dark is really a great story.
By the way, i seem to notice a tendency for male criminals to die off, while the female variety thrives and fills the holes.
Actually, no. Doctor Blutadler is the longest-running villain in the series. Heartbreaker technically counts, but she’s a bit of a grey villain. Blutadler’s all evil and escaped in book 1.
Interesting book. I enjoyed it, on the whole. The end result was pretty much what I think most folks would have expected, but the road taken wasn’t IMO. My only complaint was that it felt a bit disjointed (to me at least) with some of the side plot elements you worked in to set up future story lines.
Just finished reading the book, noticed a few times an inconsistency, at least I think so, In Guardian, Cygnus was able to generate Warp Conduits, in True Dark, she seems to not use that capability at all. Just my thoughts… otherwise, loved the book 🙂
She can still use them, but they’re not as easy to make as you might think. On the planet, she’s fast enough to get anywhere in a few seconds by simply flying. She’ll be using them again in Liberty, however.

I’ll watch out for that.

Stick them in a post on the Wild Speculation page. I’ll see them.
One question, did you mean one MILLION TONS of lifting capacity for Cygnus? That’s more than an aircraft carrier. Seems rather excessive.

Just finished the book. It really lives up to its name. Never seen so much on-the-stage violence in one of your books.
It starts slow compared to the other Ultrahuman books, but it gets better and better over time.

I wouldn’t expect that to continue.
Diamond is the by far longest surviving villain in this series. Just saying.

Oh, yes. I forgot.
